The Sterling Order of Knights were founded on June 10, 1997 by Goldmoon and TrueKnight.
Taken directly from Goldmoon's Diablo-SOK site, "The reasons for the creation of this Diablo guild - Fun! When we log onto B.net, we want to find friends online to play with whom we know will not cheat and/or kill us. This is a non-cheating guild. Cheating is boring! We enjoy building up our characters and finding items on our own. When you become a member, you'll be given the chat channel name, the games' name and password, the other guild character's names, b.net account #s, time usually on and their e-mail addresses."
Diablo-SOK did very well and we had a lot of fun. The whole objective was not to cheat, and to have fun! How could you go wrong?
Inspired by Goldmoon's SOK site, 3 other websites developed. Dubbed 'SOK Subsites', Jubal's "SOK Subsite", ValdrazO's "The Court" and Tarluin's "Sorceror's Subsite". Each webmaster brought to the SOK their own ideas and creativity.
On September 3, 1997 The Sterling Order of Knights applied for an Ultima Online guild. When Ultima Online came out it was an exciting time for us all. With the features of this new game, we could now all play in the same game at the same time. With Ultima Online released, Diablo-SOK was slowly dwindling out its roster as members moved over to explore this brave new world. With no one to carry the torch for Diablo-SOK, it was laid to rest on October 7, bringing forth the birth of Ultima Online-SOK.
It was agreed that the Lake Superior server would be the new home for the SOK. Diablo-SOK's rolled in to add to our number, and recruitment started in Britannia. Goldmoon restructured the SOK site to reflect our new home, Britannia.
As time went by, the Sterling Order of Knights flourished. We were all new to this game, as was everyone else. But united, we were able to conquer and achieve anything. Together we made new adventures, and built our strength and riches. The Sterling Order of Knights Meeting Hall was built by Goldmoon, TrueKnight and Scorpion. Based in the fair city of Ocllo, this two-story Hall made the small island our new home.
Shortly after that time, SOK underwent some drastic changes. Origin made a new shard named Catskills. This offered hope of a fresh start, and much less lag. On December 19, Goldmoon moved to Catskills and several SOK followed. Someone was needed to maintain the SOK website and keep the guild going on Lake Superior. Jubal of Nujel'm became the new guildmaster on the Lake Superior shard.
Jubal's website brought many dynamic elements into SOK. The Message Board was introduced, as well as a member roster with pictures of the characters and a virtual UO business card that automatically added the SOK member to your ICQ system.
Shortly after the guild system was in place in UO, the High Council was established. This enabled all members of the SOK access to the guildstone, provided that a council member was online. The High Council consisted mainly of members of SOK since Diablo.
During our stay in Britainnia we frequently adventured with two guilds, BliZZard of Warr and Southern Slayers. A proposal was made to unite our guilds in an alliance named the United Federation of Ocllo. The purpose of this alliance was to constantly have people we could adventure with. A Meeting of the High Council of SOK was called, and it was agreed that we would join the United Federation of Ocllo.
The alliance resulted in some changes, some of them unforeseen. We became one of the largest guilds in Ultima Online. We were able to have large-scale Player Events on a semi-regular basis, and most of them were a sucess. Details on these player events can be found at Baerwolf's History Page.
Unfortunately, some of the things tarnished in UFO were our identity and loyalty. There were many more players to adventure with, but most were not what we could consider 'SOK Material'. Many members who could not gain membership into SOK would end up being our guildmates the very next day, through joining BoW or SS. Some members that were recruited into SOK would end up being a part of BoW or SS the next day as well, much to the bewilderment of our guild leadership. In times of need against unique perils of Britannia, sometimes our fellow guildmates would not be there, or not respond to cries of help.
SOK had definately changed. Many of our key members of SOK had claimed that they were no longer part of the UFO alliance, and left to explore other servers. SOK went from being the largest guild in the alliance to an almost non-existant guild. With the best of intentions, UFO did not work out. Jubal announced to Arcan and WarrYorr that SOK would be leaving the alliance to become independent once more.
Shortly after that, EverQuest beta started. Jubal left to the new lands and appointed Shalafi (Alex) as the Guildmaster of SOK-UO. Many of our older members came back to play in Norrath, either because they came back from quitting UO, or because we no longer were a part of UFO. Our numbers grew once more as we established our strength in the new lands.
As the guild grew, it became a daunting task for Jubal to handle on his own. The guild was becoming so large that some felt the 'old ways' were being forgotten. The guild needed to adapt to the changes and some members were promoted to Officers in order to assist with guild transition and management.
Alex regrouped the branch of the Sterling Order of Knights in Ultima Online. For most of a year, the two branches of SOK were successfully expanded. Despite some setbacks and frailty, SOK in UO had a promising future. Alex had a forced hiatus from the internet, and SOK fell apart in UO. With some pride and some regret, the branch was laid to rest in 2000.
At this time a Charter was introduced to focus the Knights on their role in online gaming. This set a standard for its members on what was to be accepted in the organization. This was a step forward in ensuring that SOK represents only the finest.
Over the years SOK has had many interesting and unique roleplaying experiences. We were a part of the Gresh'Maj (multi-guild roleplaying event) and the Collective of Old Fennin (server-wide roleplaying organization). We also had some smaller scale events like the return of the old Dark Order of Knights. Dozens of wonderful tales have been told and shared in our own Rusty Dagger tavern (an in-character message board named after Krag's SOK Tavern in Ultima Online). Something about the Sterling Order attracted other guilds to seek out alliances with the noble Knights, included among these was the Pretentious Malevolent Sisters.
PMS, an all-female guild, had a one of a kind relationship with SOK from the start. Somewhat of a sibling guild, PMS began getting closer and closer to SOK over time. Eventually the two guild were so close that they held a real life meet together, in Florida. Many stories were told and friends were made, and in the end PMS and SOK were even closer. After a while, PMS disbanded and mostly merged with SOK.
During all this time, the Sterling Order has not been basically or entirely comprised of role players and their adventures. Indeed, a large number of Knights are purely powergamers, and there are also (arguably even more) combination rper/pger Knights in membership. Indeed, SOK is one of very few guilds that has maintained a balance for so long and kept any option open to all of its members.
In Everquest, SOK is hailed and renowned for its consistent honor in gaming. The Knights are also known far and wide as one of few guilds that allows anyone to sign up for its raids and runs, as well as win treasure from their battling and merits, guildmate or not. A traveler coming across a Knight on a lonely road can actually rest assured that this Knight, even if they are a complete stranger, is a quality individual. That's something to be proud of, and news of that has spread.
News of the Sterling Order of Knights nobility has, in fact, spread so far that the guild is now many times the size that anyone would have thought of four years ago, or even last year. Although the Knights haven't recruited or encouraged joining at all and have only acted to curb the size of the guild with near-constant recruitment restrictions, closed applications, secret applications, and so forth, the memberbase is larger than it has ever been and steadily increasing in size.
The increased numbers, among many other issues, have led to an increased workload to the Knights' administrators and officers over time. Many new officers were recruited, but over time many left. The officers had to go through hard and trying times to learn how to handle something so large and maintain the fundamental professionalism and honor in the Knighthood. After many officers left the guild altogether, the hard-learned lessons were put into action and the officers began to learn to work as a well oiled team instead of simply as a High Council for decision making.
The Knighthood had a strong presence in the beta of Dark Age of Camelot and poured into the game after release. In the lands of Hibernia on the Bedevere server, we continued our great tradition of exploration and adventure. We made many new friends and allies, including Shady Lane. SOK was a sight that struck fear into the hearts of our enemies, and we organized countless keep raids and fortifications. Some Knights, such as Thadicus and Moreta, stood out for their ingame leadership abilities and brought glory to the guild through their actions. Recalling our previous experience in a multi-guild alliance, we carefully founded Flames of the Phoenix with other guilds and entered into what was the largest organization of Hibernian power and honor on the server.
After some years of gaming, the branch was put to rest Dec 20, 2004. A statement from Moreta on closing the branch, "We have had a great run in DAoC from start to finish. For many of us we did everything. We found a wonderful home in Hibernia Bedevere. We lead alliances and have been a part of other alliances just as fulfilling. We met wonderful friends and made bonds that will last many years into the future. For some of us, we saw it through to Trials of Atlantis and did all that DAoC had to offer. We went from the depths of the ocean to the furthest reaches of every zone, dungeon, and Master level from 1 to 10. We fought all of the dirty Albs and Mids with ferocity and true honor.
Most of all though, we showed what it meant to be a Knight. In every step we took, we were polite, kind, helpful and tried to respect those we played alongside."
The Sterling Order in Everquest has been through some tough times. When Dark Age of Camelot was released a great majority of the Knights across all games went to adventure in Hibernia. This effectively crippled SOK in EQ as there were only a handful of Knights online in Norrath each night, and no one knew if SOK in EQ would ever recover. During those hard times Leod (known as Zantaer) was made Guildmaster of the EQ branch. He enlisted some Officer Advocates to assist with the leadership duties and set about strengthening the guild. Concepts such as the Lead Forum (where he and a few other raid leaders and officers kept track of loot distribution), and the Focus (clearly defined guild direction) abetted this process. The entire guild in EQ worked towards a general end, with the benefit of everybody in mind. This type of coordination increased our success greatly. Finally and most importantly, Knights have came back to EQ from other games time and again to be with their family and friends. With the efforts of many faithful and persistent Knights, the Sterling Order in EQ continued on.
SOK was always renowned in Norrath for our inclusiveness, and that was evidenced by our many allies. Just a few of the many examples are The Forgotten Order, House of Kindred, and Caelum Infinitum. In fact, our alliance with CI became such a close bond over time that we raided together daily and shared loot distribution and close leadership coordination. Within this structure of cooperation and friendship, SOK and CI are achieving things in the game they could not imagine otherwise.
In mid 2003, Star Wars: Galaxies released. Designed by Raph Koster and many of the old UO team, SWG offered a skill-based intricacy and alternative to level-based gaming that many had missed for years in a genre dominated by EQ and DAoC. The Sterling Order again poured into a world after release, and immediately set about achieving as much as they could on the Starsider server. Many Knights in this branch demonstrated their personal valor through helping the guild collectively advance, and this group was later formed into an SOK Harvester Operation (gathering resources across the galaxy for the benefit of all Knights). With the substantial aid of a dozen solid guildmates showing largesse, Alex and Surefoot (known there as Sterling and Bel'ay) built and founded Sterling Isle on a large island in the northeast sea of Corellia. Complete with its own Rusty Dagger cantina, hospital, marketplace, storage facilities, parks, ruins, gardens and trees, factories, biker gang, Rebel base, city hall, space port, and of course the SOK Guild Hall, this island paradise was frequented by many players. SOK made new friends, including the Crimson Order (who later joined us in the city and became excellent allies) and the Insurgent Sisterhood.
After many more adventures in yet another game, SOK moved on. What follows is an exerpt from Alex's closing address when SOK-SWG was laid to rest June 17, 2004: "In our time in Star Wars, SOK has done everything we wanted to do or could have wanted to do. We achieved all our goals: we've slain those imperials, built a successful city from a deserted island, killed all the baddest creatures in the galaxy again and again from Endor to Lok to Dantooine while exploring the galaxy inside and out, partied with our friends, mastered all the classes and skills, made tens of millions of credits, crafted all our own weapons, food, homes, furniture, armor, droids, medicine, etc, made quite a few good friends for the future, and even had a jedi in our ranks. We pwned the game and moved on. So it's with no regret that I give this announcement. See you in the next game."
In mid 2004 a unique game called City of Heroes released, and SOK was formed again after a strong beta presence. CoH had players as superheroes zipping around stopping crime and saving the world. An innovative game, City of Heroes saw the Super Group SOK on its Justice server protecting Paragon City under the leadership of Trubador. Once more friendships were forged, adventures were had, legends were born, and history was made. After our heroes traveled onward to keep new lands safe, the Super Group was laid to rest Jan 3, 2005.
With so many online games out now, we have built a place simply for coordinating in any and all games whether we are officially established or not (such as Warcraft III, Counterstrike, or Battlefield 1942). Neverwinter Nights was fun for many for a while, as was Anarchy Online, and Earth & Beyond. Though few play, our world-builders and sci-fi lovers still tinker in many worlds.
Seasoned gaming company Blizzard gave birth to the World of Warcraft in 2004. SOK had an incredibly strong presence in the alpha and beta of WoW. Needless to say, the Sterling Order of Knights formed up shortly after release. Most of the active Knights and officers are playing in the World of Warcraft right now on the Elune server. We are enjoying adventuring with old and new friends while exploring this new world nightly. SOK-WoW has a brilliantly bright future.
The guild exists to be a meeting place for people in their forays into the worlds of online gaming. A place to not only hang out with old friends but meet new ones. You can log on every night and play the same old game with the same old friends, but there is still a constant influx of new faces and potentially new friends. As we are spread across so many games but remain centered with strong leadership, this place remains a shining light in the chaotic darkness and instability of online gaming today. When a game dies out, the 'goodbye's to your old friends don't have to be permanent. This guild outlasts the games, and so this place is a stable home for gamers. We of the Sterling Order continue battling to uphold its founding ideals of honor and respect.
